Estée Lauder’s Tangerine Dream

When Tom Pecheux decided to go the sixties route with the makeup for Derek Lam’s Spring show, he had to improvise. “I’m definitely cooking,” the former pastry chef-turned-makeup artist said of the thick orange line he scrawled across models’ lids using the haphazard combination of a lip pencil and a lipstick lab sample. The problem, you see, was that back in September, Estée Lauder, for whom Pecheux serves as creative director of makeup, didn’t have the color arsenal to accommodate such bright visions. Pecheux has been steadily changing that since he came on board, and his latest launch for the beauty behemoth is a further testament to his promise to inject “a little youth” into the brand. His three-piece, limited-edition Orange Crush Pure Color collection features two eye shadows to easily re-create the original runway design, including Orange Crush, a burnt tangerine that can be applied wet for precision or dry for a sheer wash of color, as well Sugar Cube, a shimmering snow pigment that Pecheux suggests applying in a triangular shape on the inner corners of eyes for glisten. The third component is our favorite part of the range, a new Pure Color Gloss in a creamy orange shade that imparts a glorious dose of high-shine opaque orange color to lips. It’s a bit less saturated than a full-on pumpkin-hued lipstick, and all the better for it.
