When confronted by the longstanding rivalry between L.A. and New York, we almost always side with Manhattan—less because we’ve called the Big Apple home for almost ten years, now, and more because when it comes to matters of California, we’ve always fancied ourselves more NorCal than SoCal. There’s something undeniably appealing about that region’s mix of stunning natural wonders, cosmopolitanism, and a certain hippie sensibility that has remained alive and well long after 1967′s Summer of Love. It’s that spirit that has yielded a ton of excellent slow-food inspired restaurants—and an even more impressive cadre of green-leaning beauty companies, like Marie Veronique Organics.
The Mill Valley-based brand has been on our radar since we first discovered its Crème de Soleil Tinted SPF 30 in 2009, and we’ve never looked back. In the years since, we’ve been wowed by its frequently organic, all-natural formulas for everything from parched limbs to congested, acne-prone skin, which don’t just look and smell pretty but actually work. You can understand, then, why we couldn’t wait to get our hands on an entirely new antiaging range from MVO designed with the same philosophy as its original lineup: “Toxic ingredients, harmful chemicals, artificial agents, and preservatives are not the solution for making your skin look and feel younger.”
Pacific, as the collection is called, culls its potent list of ingredients almost entirely from the Pacific Ocean, and addresses everything from wrinkles and sagging to dehydration and pigmentation with standouts like the sea-kelp-tinged Mist, Hawaiian red-pond-algae-rich Face Oil infused with raspberry seed oil (a personal fave), and the marine bioactive peptide-boosted Night Serum with Retinol. The most impressive bottle in the bunch, though, is likely the Topical Marine Treatment, which contains the highest concentration of Natural Marine Extract, a patent-pending compound derived entirely from the sea, that cannot be compared to anything else out there, according to Dr. Eric Lewis, the California-based cosmetic dermatologist with whom it was developed. “No other product on the market makes such a significant impact on your skin,” Dr. Lewis says of the green-hued, food-grade elixir that actually increases your skin’s number of fibrocytes, which are responsible for creating collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, rather than just stimulating existing ones. The result is plumper, younger-looking skin, no injections required.
Intrigued, we put ourselves on the Topical Marine Treatment regimen, which includes one dose every other day for a month, followed by two doses a week for one month, and then one every week thereafter as needed. We are only a quarter of the way through the process, so we’re not at liberty to fully report on how it’s working yet. But we can divulge this tidbit: Our mother—the “queen of creams” and a, er, opinionated aesthetic voice, if ever there was one—told us that our skin looked “like porcelain,” last week, which is a huge compliment coming from her. Do with that what you will.
