The Quandary: How do I break up with my trainer? I feel like I’ve reached a plateau in my workouts and want to try someone new, but I don’t know how to end things with my current pro.
The Expert in Residence: Jessi Kneeland, trainer at Peak Performance in New York City.
The Advice: “The best tactic is to be honest and polite. Typically, people who break up with their trainer want to go in a different direction. So I would say something like, ‘I’ve really enjoyed the kettle-bell work we’ve done, but I really want to try some barre classes or go back to running.’ She might try to convince you to stay, but just be firm about wanting to experiment with a different technique. A good trainer knows their expertise and isn’t offended if a client wants to move on. If, for example, someone wanted a boot-camp-like training experience with a drill sergeant to push her, I would not be the right person for her. Just don’t lie and say you’re moving away, unless you really are or your trainer is a super-pushy type who won’t take no for an answer. In that case, do what you have to do. But otherwise, try to be considerate: Give at least two weeks notice before ending your sessions and tell your trainer in person, if possible. The worst thing you can do is just disappear and not show up. We’ve reserved space in our schedules and not booked other clients for your time slots, so even if it’s awkward to do the breakup, your trainer would much rather know what’s going on than be left wondering what happened to you.”
