Jo Malone London Hosts A “Thoroughly Proper” Holiday Party

Since Charlotte Stockdale was named “style editor” for Jo Malone London in a series of changes and upgrades meant to make the brand ever more relevant and desirable, we’ve been curious as to what, exactly, the i-D fashion director and stylist would precisely be doing in her post. “I sniff, I smell, I do everything,” she revealed last night at “a thoroughly proper” holiday party at the brand’s new Marylebone office, which sits in an elegant and vast Georgian town house. “I do everything from start to finish, from helping to formulate scents to packaging,” continued Stockdale, who had her hair dyed a festive red and green ombré for the occasion. “But it’s such an iconic English brand; there is not much to improve upon.”

A long beloved gifting go-to, the quintessentially British candles and eaux de toilette wrapped in those signature cream and black boxes feature increasingly thoughtful notes (think: orange blossom, lime and basil, pomegranate and pine), which are made all the better through the art of scent combining, a pastime that Jo Malone London helped popularize. The new year will bring more olfactory enticement for fans of the brand to love when its Sugar and Spice collection debuts, celebrating English cakes and confections with essences of ginger and nutmeg.

While swooning over the Rose Uniacke-designed space, conversation between guests like Hugh Grant, David Bailey, Tallulah Harlech Peter Pilotto and Nick Rhodes turned to holiday plans, of which an Alaïa-clad Stockdale has a few. “I’ll be decamping to the English countryside with family for a quiet, cozy holiday,” she said, revealing her secret to successful gift-giving. “I personally love to give—and receive—books. They make everyone happy, including children. Then of course there is Jo Malone London,” she effused—and Yves Saint Laurent, according to Alex Fury. The Love magazine editor was beaming about the YSL Robyn wedge shoes in hounds tooth and patent-leather he had purchased for his mother. We could all use a son like that.
