With six books already to her credit—not to mention a world-renowned cosmetics collection—Bobbi Brown could easily rest on her laurels. But the mother of the latter-day natural beauty movement has plenty more to say. Last night, following NYFW backstage turns at shows like Rachel Roy, Holmes & Yang, and Marissa Webb, Brown hosted an intimate gathering of friends and supporters at New York’s Treasure & Bond to toast her latest tome, Pretty Powerful: Beauty Stories to Inspire Confidence.
“This one is very much about celebrating women. I wanted to show how good they look with and without makeup,” Brown says of the compilation that categorizes a group of celebrities, athletes, and normal folk into sections that reflect personality and individual style, with a bounty of product picks and tips from the famed face painter littered throughout. FEED founder Lauren Bush Lauren heads up the Pretty Natural chapter, while Pretty Radiant is fronted by Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe and Those We Love Most author Lee Woodruff sets up Pretty Authentic. “I wanted to show that beauty isn’t just on the outside; it’s who you are as a person that contributes to how you appear to others, so it’s about sharing [these women's] amazing stories,” Brown said of the selection process, which also includes cameos from Blythe Danner and singer Alexa Ray Joel, who provided the evening’s entertainment. With 70 women profiled in all, Brown did find one subject most awe-inspiring: “Liz Murray from Homeless to Harvard. Her story is just so incredible,” the makeup guru gushed about the self-made Ivy League grad and inspirational speaker.
Conversation quickly turned to Brown’s other source of high-profile female inspiration of late: Katie Holmes. Though absent from these festivities, Brown’s first-ever celebrity brand ambassador was there in spirit. “Katie reminds me of a modern day Ali MacGraw, who I admired growing up. She is a classic beauty with a sparkle in her eye and a smile that lights up a room,” Brown said of Holmes. “She is beautiful without trying to be,” she continued—which, perhaps uncoincidentally, sums up the message of Pretty Powerful quite nicely.
