As if there were any question, Marilyn Monroe has been named the greatest blonde of all time in a new poll from Clairol Nice ‘N Easy. Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and Cameron Diaz also made the cut, although seeing as how Marilyn was really a brunette, we’d feel cheated if we were Cam. [Stylist]
We called it earlier this summer; two-toned hair is officially a trend. It’s season-specific, though, so Drew Barrymore, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Rachel Bilson may want to make appointments with their colorists ASAP. [WWD]
And now back to Marilyn. It wasn’t just the screen star’s golden locks that made her a fan favorite. And allegedly, it wasn’t her décolletage either. According to a New Zealand anthropologist, her attractiveness—and female attractiveness in general—is based on a simple hip-to-waist measurement, that being 0.7. A waist measurement that is exactly 70 percent of the hip circumference also happens to define modern-day beauties like Kate Moss, Jessica Alba, and supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio. [Daily Mail]
Luckily, Avon is here for those of us with ratios that aren’t quite up to par. To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the beauty giant is launching Avon Voices, a global online talent search for a female singer with a songwriting competition component that incorporates the theme of empowerment. Fergie—whose Outspoken fragrance just launched under the brand’s guidance—will play judge. Look out, American Idol. [WWD]
Amy Adams, Angelina Jolie, and Jennifer Aniston still don’t have beauty contracts. Neither do Rachel Bilson, Sandra Bullock, or January Jones. So who’s next? Our money is on Taylor Swift. If you see a fragrance from the country crossover sensation in the coming year, we told you so. [WWD]
Good news: The elusive male contraceptive pill is currently undergoing clinical trials. Bad news: a new study shows that most women are skeptical as to whether their partners would remember to take it. [Science Daily]
If you’ve been wondering why Hayden Panettiere dyed her hair red, it’s because the Heroes star is apparently tired of being thought of as cute—a difficult mold to break out of when you are 5″ 2″ and play a cheerleader on TV. [Avon]
In other questionable hair color choices, yesterday’s news that Kate Moss had jumped on the gray-hair-is-now-cool-for-all-ages bandwagon is, well, yesterday’s news. The model is back to her golden blond just 24 hours later. Perhaps we should consider her two-tone moment a fleeting homage to her pal Daphne Guinness. [Daily Mail]
Aging is not necessarily gradual, a new study shows, and can actually take a nose-dive into wrinkles territory once you reach a “tipping point,” now thought to be age 35. Enjoy 34 while it lasts. [Daily Mail]
Full disclosure: We are among the bandwagoneers to embrace the red lip over the past few years as it has steadily made a mainstream comeback. No more sheer gloss for us, thanks. When it comes to important public appearances, we see red—the more opaque and brighter the better. But as the old standby continues to regain popular favor, we’re beginning to wonder if it’s less statement-making when everyone at your party also has it painted on. Case in point: At amfAR’s inaugural Milan fashion week event last night, we spotted at least four crimson pouts, in glossy and matte incarnations and in a shade range that included Dita Von Teese’s pink-red and Linda Evangelista’s orange-tinged hue. Should we start embracing the rainbow of lip offerings that have made repeat appearances on the runway, or can red really be universal and totally unique at the same time?
Rachel Bilson was spotted dining out yesterday with a friend, looking less young Hollywood and more Los Feliz hipster than usual. Blousy plaid shirt and jean cutoffs: check; Ray-Ban-inspired sunglasses: check. A killer high, messy ponytail that’s making us wish we too had long wispy layers: check. The honking engagement ring and designer bag sort of give her away, but otherwise, she’d have fooled us. Thoughts on her style savvy off the red carpet?
Despite a later-in-life affinity for The O.C. (we hopped on the bandwagon around season four), we were never really huge Rachel Bilson fans until she emerged as something of a fashion darling after the show’s demise. A big 3.1 Phillip Lim devotee, she turned out for the Vogue-sponsored one-year anniversary party for the designer’s L.A. store in a head-to-toe look from a past collection and makeup to match the line’s dressed-up, down-to-earth aesthetic. A clean face, pink blush on the apples of her cheeks, and mascara on both the top and bottom lashes spelled put-together but not overdone, which seemed a bit more young Hollywood than Orange County to us. You?
