Beauty Sound Bites: Monsters Inc.

“It was my hobby as a kid. I used to make monsters in my bedroom, [which was] my makeup laboratory—I slept amid monsters and toxic chemicals…I felt for the monsters; I was never afraid of them.”

In the case of Baker, it looks like nightmares really do come true. Above, we pay homage to one of Baker’s best (and most terrifying) paint jobs: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video. While the artist initially didn’t think the pop star would be a “good candidate” for his type of makeup, when he watched the iconic dance filmed on-set for the first time, he said, “I’m witnessing something here—this is pretty cool.” Indeed.

Rick Baker Gives Good Face

-------

If you’ve left your Halloween costume to the last minute, head straight to MAC to pick up an arsenal of acrylic paints and pencils, then try your hand at face painting inspired by Rick Baker. The legendary special-effects artist has earned seven Oscars (yes, one for every day of the week) for his work on movies like The Wolfman and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Not to mention, he’s the makeup mastermind behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video. Just in time for tonight, Baker created step-by-step tutorials for three silver-screen-worthy looks: a zombie, an updated version of the Bride of Frankenstein, or, my personal favorite, a colorful sugar skull from the Day of the Dead. After you watch the video above, set aside at least an hour to apply, then prepare to shock and awe.
