It’s My Birthday And I’ll Go Blonde If I Want To; Complement Your Button-Up With A Beehive; And More
Former muse to Marc Jacobs and current catwalker Ruby Jean Wilson makes a triumphant return to blonde in honor of her birthday. Having your cake and getting a dye job, too—now that’s what I call a celebration. [Instagram]
Speaking of strands, Uniqlo debuted a new microsite, HairDo, that offers GIF-style how-tos on everything from beehives to braids. You’ll never make the mistake of pairing your turtleneck with a ponytail again. [The Cut]
Rihanna, like today’s birthday girl, opted to make a change—the difference being that the pop star’s transformation is far more permanent…and painful. A chisel and a mallet (yes, you read that right) were used to stamp her hand with a traditional Maori tattoo in honor of a recent trip to New Zealand. They don’t call her Bad Gal RiRi for nothing. Channeling your inner mountain man just got easier, and doesn’t even require pitching a tent. Take an excursion to the wild—otherwise known as Williamsburg—to see Hall Newbegin, founder of Juniper Ridge (a brand that brings the notion of backpacking to your bathroom via all-natural soaps and cologne) in action. He’s kicking off his two-month pop-up shop at Fellow Barber in Brooklyn by steaming raw ingredients (like foraged fir) on-site with a whiskey distiller. Newbegin told T that he encourages the public to bring their own “trimmings” to create bespoke scents. Will hipsters show up with PBR, American Spirits ambers, and grizzly beard clippings in hand? Only time shall tell. [T]
*UPDATE: Ruby Jean Wilson’s dramatic dye job turned out to be a wig. Here’s hoping she’ll take the plunge (for real, this time) at 21.
Not to toot our own horn or anything, but we’re pretty sure that Rihanna’s latest paint job was inspired by our story on the revival of the French manicure. She’s known for her pointy, talon-like tips and crazy colored polish, but it looks like RiRi’s going back to the basics—and leaving the bedazzled, bad girl image behind (at least when it comes to her nails).
Comedy Central may have “roasted” James Franco last night in Culver City, but at the VMAs in Brooklyn, it was all about grills. Rihanna was decidedly understated this year—wearing cuffed jeans, an MC Lyte tee, a diamond-studded collar, and a tiny cross positioned between her two front teeth. And while this isn’t the first time that RiRi debuted some bedazzled dental work (wearing a much larger gold gun earlier in the month), this bite-sized version is something we can get on board with (especially when compared to Katy Perry’s over-the-top, rainbow, diamond-studded “ROAR” mouthpiece). With everyone from Madge to Queen Bey giving their pearly whites a serious gilt trip, we’re wondering if the mouth party will become as mainstream as the arm party? And an even bigger question, will Lara Stone or Georgia May Jagger fill their famous gaps with grills? Time (and teeth) shall tell.
Nicole By OPI Launches a New Line of Country Strong Nail Polishes; Delevingne’s Arches Affect Google’s Algorithms; and More
Manicurist Deborah Lippmann may have recently tapped former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson to produce a glittery purple lacquer, but Nicole By OPI announced today that it’s partnering with fellow Idol alum Carrie Underwood to produce a line of fourteen polishes, set to hit shelves in January. The predetermined hit designed for the country star: a gold textured shade aptly named Carrie’d Away. [Twitter]
In other nail news, Byrdie reports that celebrities such as Rihanna and Adele are taking a break from short tips and opting for sophisticated talons. Even Daria Werbowy sported an extra-long ruby mani for Céline’s latest campaign.
It’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind…and her nail color, but buying a bottle of nail polish remover will soon force you to flash that always-unflattering driver’s license photo at the drugstore. In an attempt to curb the production of methamphetamine, CVS implemented a new policy in New England (soon to roll out chain-wide) that requires a valid ID to purchase acetone-containing products. Birthday girl Cara Delevingne hasn’t just impacted the fashion world in a major way, according to Vogue.co.UK an increase in online searches for the model’s name has affected Google’s algorithms. Search terms like “tweezers” and “eyebrow plucking” have significantly decreased in popularity since November 2012. The Internet giant and super’s arches have officially spoken: Bigger (and bushier) really is better.
Beyoncé reported, via Instagram, that she pedaled her way to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the final concert of the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour before she takes off for the U.K. But her earth-friendly form of transportation wasn’t the only surprise she had planned: She uploaded three pics of her newly sheared, blonde pixie to her feed late last night and set the Twitterverse abuzz. (I like to think of Queen Bey breaking out the scissors as the beauty equivalent of the big reveal of Prince George Alexander Louis.) While she won’t be whipping her signature mermaid waves anytime soon, I’m sure she’ll find a way to rock this short and chic cut onstage. And I can’t help but wonder if Beyoncé’s inspiration was Rihanna’s curly crop, which she sported earlier in the week, or if it was just an unfortunate case of bike-helmet hair that fueled this chop viewed round the world.
