If Saint Laurent Had a Makeup Baby, This Is What It Would Look Like

Sky Ferreira is no stranger to sparkle. In fact, when I first met the catwalker-turned-singer, she was wearing bedazzled Saint Laurent stockings (the same pair she sported on the way to the hospital after she injured herself onstage in California during Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz tour). But it isn’t just her gams that are getting the glimmer treatment—her makeup artist, Amy Chance, has been sticking to a combo of Make Up For Ever lilac glitter and Rimmel London Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss lipstick in 107 for the past week. The cat-eye shape Ferreira is so fond of is reminiscent of the sixties-inspired black wings expertly sketched on lids at Saint Laurent’s Fall 2014 show, while the shimmery aspect might as well have stemmed from the twinkling Mary Janes models wore on their feet. Combine the two ideas together and it’s a match made in makeup heaven.

On Kate’s Side

kate-bosworth-dinnerNot only was the slightly longer sleeve length on Kate Bosworth’s tee (part of her new line for Topshop, launching today) completely perfect, an observation made by’s in-house T-shirt aficionada and photo editor, but her deep side part was an ideal complement to her casual look. While Bosworth’s dividing line wasn’t clean-cut and perfect—reminding me of the rocker-inspired styles seen at Saint Laurent this season—the feminine curls and pink-stained lips added an element of easy elegance to her half-tucked top and jeans.

Throwback Thursday: We Love the Nineties

Milla-Jovovich-by-Peter-Lindbergh,-Allure-US-Dec-1996_resizeThrowback Thursday is a regular feature on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.

The Model: Milla Jovovich

The Moment: Nineties Grunge

The Motivation: If you haven’t already noticed, the nineties are back. From Hedi Slimane’s grunge collection for Saint Laurent to just about everybody else’s obsession with midriff tops, fashion is on repeat. And beauty insiders, for the most part, have taken the same route. On the red carpet and in editorials, there’s a return to the nude face and the no-makeup-makeup look popularized by supes like Linda, Christy, and Naomi. So it’s no surprise we’re slightly obsessed with this Peter Lindbergh-lensed shot of Milla Jovovich. Her clean skin, smudged eyeliner, and slicked-back, slightly mussed-up pompadour are everything we want to embrace this summer.

Niche Fragrance Gets a Sampling Service; Reese Witherspoon Is Legally Brunette; And More…

Birchbox and Glossybox, meet Olfactif. The Chicago-born perfume sampling service sends three miniature niche flacons to subscribers for $18 a month. It’s first box includes bottles from L’Artisan Parfumeur, Imaginary Authors, and Sonoma Scent Studio. [Crain's]

As images of Hedi Slimane’s new Saint Laurent music project—featuring Courtney Love, Kim Gordon, Marilyn Manson, and L.A. indie-rocker Ariel Pink—make their way around the blogosphere today, we noticed a poignant beauty note in the self-styled black-and-white images: black nail polish appears in its most kempt—and unkempt— form throughout the series. Fingers crossed a signature black edition of the brand’s La Laque long-lasting nail lacquer is also on the way. [Dazed Digital]

Reese Witherspoon turned her blonde locks a shade of warm chocolate over the weekend, and now Ellen DeGeneres appears to have followed suit. [E!]

Zoe Saldana might be the next starlet to make the cut. “At some point, I might just want to chop [all of my hair] off and go really short,” the Star Trek star recently revealed, following designers’ lead for Fall. [People StyleWatch]

Throwback Thursday: Moss’ Mulberry Mouth

Throwback Thursday is a new feature on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.

The Model: Kate Moss

The Moment: Burgundy lips, in their original glory.

The Motivation: Not that we need a reason to celebrate Ms. Moss’ illustrious career, but the super-est of them all did celebrate her thirty-ninth birthday this week and hasn’t lost a beat since she shot this 1993 editorial for Vogue Paris. If the four hundred-plus pages in her recently released tome Kate: The Kate Moss Book weren’t enough visual evidence, this shot is yet another reminder of the ingenue’s timeless appeal: Fall’s favorite burgundy lipstick looks fresh and new on a 19-year-old Kate, who paired the pigment with clear, luminous skin, subtly lined eyes framed by thin, darkened brows, and a black Yves Saint Laurent topper that Hedi Slimane updated for his Spring 2013 Saint Laurent show. No wonder Moss was such an outspoken fan of the designer’s first collection.
