Stila Does Skincare

Since taking the beauty establishment by storm in 1994 with hand-drawn sketches of whimsical girls emblazoned onto its outer packaging, makeup artist Jeanine Lobell’s Stila brand has made a habit out of creating cult-favorite beauty products. Lobell’s original Lip and Cheek Stain was one of our first makeup buys (and continues to be a staple in our routine), and Stila’s Tinted Moisturizer is nearly unbeatable in our estimation. Under new ownership, however, the brand continues to innovate and is about to take things in an entirely new direction: The skincare category.

While Stila has dabbled in skincare before—a 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm was launched last year, and a small skincare line called “Petal Infusions” was released in 2005—it has just released a six-piece skincare system meant to work together for all of your cleansing and hydrating needs. Made up of the essentials, like a face wash, toner, moisturizer, cleansing wipes, brightening serum, and facial scrub, it was born from a desire to create a flawless canvas on which to paint your makeup. “The 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm really started everything off,” says Stila’s global creative director Sarah Lucero. “We decided to launch the skincare line because we really wanted our customers to have great, prepped skin to apply makeup, and the time was right for us to deliver that. We’re known as a makeup brand, and our focus is on providing products that are really needed, that perfect the skin, and which give you a really good base. We were also waiting until the right technology and ingredients came along.” Those ingredients include essential oils such as geranium, orange, and peppermint oils, which combine to create a delectable aroma, as well as extracts from the Swiss Alpine Rose, a flower that thrives in harsh conditions and mimics the skin’s stem cell function responsible for renewing and repairing cells and tissue.

Each product is labeled with a quirky, function-specific name and packaged in the same silver tubes as the makeup. “It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that other skincare brands do. I wouldn’t say it’s basic, because that’s not what it is, but they are necessity products, and the quality speaks for itself,” Lucero continues of the no-fuss, easy-to-navigate lineup. Look out for three new BB creams set to launch in January.
