Flashback Friday is a feature on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.
The Model: Cecilia Chancellor
The Moment: Espresso Lipstick
The Motivation: “Mocha was such a key word back [in the nineties],” said Style.com video star and makeup artist Kayleen McAdams of the brown lipstick trend that ran rampant throughout much of the decade (and the late eighties, when this photo was taken). To modernize this beauty concept, McAdams suggests skipping the heavy lip liner and applying the pigment with your fingertip to make it look “worn in.” The highlight and contouring technique that has risen in popularity alongside the burgeoning Kardashian empire, however, should also be nixed. “If you do it with a little bit of bronze shimmer, some mascara, and beautiful glowing skin, a brown lip is actually really pretty.” For confirmation, just look to this image of model Cecilia Chancellor.
For those who prefer a lighter lip treatment, watch McAdams’ step-by-step guide to getting Scarlett Johansson’s bee-stung, nude lips.
There were quite a few contenders for best beauty move of the week—among them, the steel underliner sported by Zoë Kravitz and mixed metal bobbies Emma Watson wore to one side. Here, our five remaining red-carpet favorites.
Jennifer Connelly; Noah premiere; Madrid, Spain
The perfect pair: Connelly’s crystal collar and fuchsia lips.

The blue lids and lashes Pat McGrath created at Dior successfully transitioned from the catwalk to the stage care of Clark.

We don’t know which was better, Jones’ windswept waves or fiery lips.

A Sneak Preview of Dolce & Gabbana’s New Commercial Starring Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey-------
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are known for pulling out all the stops when it comes to their celebrity-studded campaigns. Over the weekend, paparazzi snapped Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey shooting a new television commercial for the Italian label in New York’s West Village. Johansson and McConaughey, who’ve appeared in D&G advertisements for the One Desire and the One Gentleman fragrances, respectively, cruised around in a vintage Alfa Romeo sports car while taking direction from Martin Scorsese. The A-list actress (who recently appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair France‘s premiere issue) evoked old-Hollywood glamour in a black lace dress, with her wavy blond tresses swept back into a low, loose bun, and dramatic, winged liquid eye liner. Do you think the duo makes a good match?

People magazine has named Gwyneth Paltrow the world’s most beautiful woman of 2013. No surprise there. The GOOP creator credits her family—and that five-day-a-week Tracy Anderson Method workout regimen—for looking and feeling great. [People]
Amber Le Bon might have followed in her mother Yasmin’s footsteps when she became a model, but it’s her father, Duran Duran front man Simon Le Bon, that she goes to for beauty products. “If I’m feeling in a very naughty mood, I’ll steal some of Daddy’s Crème de la Mer,” she says. “On the whole, though, I’m very low-maintenance.” [Daily Mail]
Scarlett Johansson has joined Megan Fox and Rachel McAdams and gone a shade of bright auburn for the filming of Captain America 2. Three’s as trend, as they say. [E!]
Face of Rimmel cosmetics and Just Cavalli fragrance, Georgia May Jagger is a generous beauty-product junkie. On a recent trip to NYC, the Brit It girl picked up a big tub of the local Bee Yummy Body Cream for her pal and fellow model Cara Delevingne. Girlfriends who buy beauty products together, stay together. [Grazia]
A few years back, we had the pleasure of interviewing Scarlett Johansson, who revealed herself to be plenty in the know when it comes to natural skincare remedies. ScarJo told us that she frequently uses Manuka honey as a mask, raw lemon as an exfoliator, and, according to a new report, she’s also been known to apply apple cider vinegar as an astringent. Who knew? [Metro UK]

We watch RuPaul’s Drag Race for the heated competition (and amazing sound bites), but the show’s makeup artistry is equally impressive. Ivy Winters’ transformation from man to glamorous woman includes contouring, lashes, eyeshadow, brows, and a multi-platform lip application that puts even our strongest face-painting efforts to shame. Speaking of impressive makeovers, ever wonder what Barbie would look like without the mascara, the pink pout, the blue shadow—and with braces? One graphic artist did, to staggering effect. [HuffPo]
