Sofia-Coppola-Coral-LipWhen we learned that Sofia Coppola’s attention to detail extended beyond her moviemaking prowess—and into the beauty realm—we developed a whole new level of respect for the director, which is saying something, considering our esteem was already pretty high. After chatting with The Bling Ring‘s makeup department head, Roz Music, it was revealed that Coppola was so in love with a particular shade of discontinued hot-pink Chanel lipstick that she called her friend in France to track down the last remaining tubes of it to use in the film. She seems to devote the same amount of thought to her personal beauty decisions as well. At the movie’s New York premiere last night, Coppola wore a gorgeous dark coral pout perfecter with an all-white ensemble that made us fall in love with the poppy color all over again. While lighter shades of the melon hue can look chalky, sticking to rich, lustrous options, like MAC’s Sweet & Sour and Sushi Kiss from its new All About Orange collection, are easy summer staples. Stealing Beauty: Behind The Scenes Makeup Secrets From The Bling Ring’s Roz Music

Emma-Watson-Bling-RingGatsby buzz aside, there is another movie premiering at Cannes this week that’s making us wish we were sipping cocktails on La Croisette, the torrential downpours that have been plaguing the Côte d’Azur not withstanding. That’d be The Bling Ring, Sofia Coppola’s new film about a group of celebrity-obsessed teenagers living in Los Angeles who decide, for kicks, to burglarize the homes of Hollywood stars. After raiding the million-dollar designer closets of their victims—including Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan—and soaking up fame along the way, the gang is eventually nabbed and brought to justice, sort of. Here’s the most scintillating part: It’s a true story, reported in an article Nancy Jo Sales wrote for Vanity Fair in 2010, and starring Emma Watson in the big-screen adaptation. For more on the ridiculous vanity captured in every scene, Style.com caught up with the film’s lead makeup artist, Roz Music, to talk about tramp stamps, weekly spray tans, and the discontinued Chanel lipstick that Coppola flew in from Paris in order to get the perfect pink for a single scene.

 

How did you get involved with The Bling Ring?
Sofia and I are old friends, I had heard she was doing this movie, and I hoped—and suspected—she would ask me to do the makeup. Especially since it was shot in my hometown [Los Angeles].

 

How much of the makeup look was inspired by the actual teenagers who the film is based on?
Very little. There are a million kids out here in L.A. that look like the main characters. It’s a very particular style. I just took my camera out and Instagrammed for days, taking pictures of kids in their natural environment. I didn’t want Teen Vogue‘s version of how their closet would look. I wanted to see real kids doing their own thing. So I took a million pictures and that was my research.

 

So how, exactly, would you describe that rich-kid-L.A. look?
It’s like kids who are trying to look older than they are. They’re sixteen, but with the hairstyles and shoes of a 30-year-old. They’ve got short shorts and high, high heels. Some of the stuff was outrageous. I mean, they’re indulgent, bratty teenagers.

 

Considering her previous reputation as a do-gooding wizard, how did you go about turning Emma Watson into an “indulgent, bratty teenager”?
Well, we gave her a tramp-stamp tattoo! Emma’s character is one of those spiritual people who wants to express it on the outside—as in, she does yoga and talks about it all the time. She’s an eye-roll-y character. We wanted the tattoo to be an expression of that, so we went with a lotus flower.

Following the successful line of nail appliqués Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais launched with MAC Cosmetics two years ago, the duo has now teamed up with Birchbox on a three-piece polish range inspired by their forthcoming Spring line. The color palette is still TBD, as Birchbox’s Facebook fans will be left with the task of voting on five possible shades. The winning lacquers will then be revealed in September and featured at Ruffian’s Spring 2014 show. [WWD]

Jennifer Lawrence isn’t the only celebrity to go brunette this week. It looks like Britney Spears has also cashed in her flaxen locks for a shade of chestnut brown. [Us]

Don’t buy perfume based on the advertising, says Hermès in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. “Ask for a sample and put it on your skin. If you like it on your skin, you can buy. No rush, take the time, because perfume is like a love affair. It’s not good to rush a love affair.” [The Cut]

Christian Dior, on the other hand, is banking on a positive consumer response to the amped-up campaign for its new Miss Dior eau de toilette, which features a TV commercial starring Natalie Portman and directed by Sofia Coppola. [British Vogue]

Britney’s Subversive Endorsement Deal; Nicki’s Pastel Makeover; and More…

If you noticed a few heavy-handed product placements in Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” video, that was intentional. The pop star apparently took in close to half a million dollars in endorsement money to spritz herself with a bottle of Radiance, her own perfume, apply Make Up For Ever’s cream eye shadow, and tout a number of other consumer-friendly items while gyrating in front of the camera. Nicki Minaj has finally parted ways with the brightly streaked wigs that have become her signature of late. Instead, the R&B superstar has diverted her penchant for a crazy color palette to her makeup for the new issue of Blackbook magazine, in which she sports bright fuchsia lipstick and mega turquoise eye shadow. We shared exclusive, John Galliano-drawn storyboards of Natalie Portman’s Sofia Coppola-directed Miss Dior Cherie commercial, and now the eagle has finally landed. Our favorite shot? Minx has tackled the celebrity nail market by getting its highly designed overlays onto some of the most famous hands in the biz. So, where does the California-based company go from here? Bite The Bullet: When Lip Stain Trumps Lipstick

In these days of renewed lipstick love, the subtle impact of a well-appointed stain or tinted balm is often lost on the majority of makeup enthusiasts. But not Sofia Coppola. At the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures gala last night in New York, the director spruced up a head-to-toe black look with a sheer, watermelon pink pigment for a moisturized, just-bitten effect. It’s actually a good trick on non-red-carpet days as well, when you’re feeling washed out or tired. Simply brush on a coat of The Balm Stainiac in Prom Queen and top off with a few finger dabs of your favorite gloss, or break out Clinique’s new Chubby Sticks in 05 Chunky Cherry for a similar effect. Sometimes, less really is more—don’t you agree?
