“Easy. Soft. No shine. Natural hair texture.” That was the mandate backstage at Alberta Ferretti, where Redken creative consultant Guido Palau concocted a look that anyone with long hair and little patience has attempted before. While at first glance, the updo models sported while showcasing a series of “fluttery, feminine options” may have appeared complex—”How has he managed to achieve the effect of mussed Heidi braids sans any actual braids? The man is some kind of magician!” you may have found yourself marveling—the execution itself was even simpler than you can imagine. Here, it’s reproduced in four easy steps for your mimicking pleasure:
1. Before drying hair, spritz with Redken Spray Starch 15 Heat Memory Styler to give it what Guido refers to as added “gut” (he also mentioned the fact that it’s important that hair doesn’t look “too clean.”)
2. Divide hair into two front-to-back sections, avoiding any sign of a distinct part—think haphazard.
3. Wrap each section around the sides of the head and backcomb slightly before pinning the ends at the front, near the forehead (insert added pins as necessary depending upon individual length).
4. Pull pieces out all over to create a softer, messier look.
