Ask any drugstore beauty queen what her favorite budget-friendly mascara is and the answer will reliably come back the same: Maybelline Great Lash. Known for its dark glossy formula, the industry-standard lash lacquer has made its way into makeup bags across the country since debuting four decades ago, becoming a fixture on vanities and movie lots alike (Mad Men makeup department head Lana Horochowski doesn’t go to work without it). Last year, Maybelline tackled the style set as well, sponsoring New York’s Fall 2010 shows at Bryant Park. To celebrate its 40th birthday, designers are returning the favor. This weekend will see the release of three limited-edition Great Lash tubes conceived by Max Azria, Tracy Reese, and Vivienne Tam. Exclusively available at Target, each mascara has a hand-scrawled signature as well as a singular black design element that adorns its classic hot pink facade. Maybelline will be heading up makeup duties at Bryant Park again this season. Its sponsorship list just came out and includes cameos at Vivienne Tam, Tracy Reese, Max Azria, and RVCA x Erin Wasson, where Style.com has learned that another live musical performance will follow last season’s Gang Gang Dance set (we can’t say who just yet, but it’s good). After watching global makeup artist Charlotte Willer work her magic in September (teal lashes at DKNY, anyone?), we’re looking forward to seeing what she comes up with for fall, especially since she’ll have a whole new crop of just-released cosmetics to play with. Particularly of interest to us are Maybelline’s latest series of XXL Pro Mascaras. The collection features four two-sided lash-enhancing varieties with a primer on one end and specialized pigmented brushes on the other for curling, extending, volumizing, and 24-hour-hold options. They’re washable, too, so you—and the bevy of makeup artists working feverishly backstage—can rely on great, runway-ready staying power and a formula that doesn’t take intensive jostling to remove.
