Born Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer in Copenhagen in 1940, Karina spent her early years in and out of foster homes, living unhappily with her mother and stepfather, bored with school and looking for a way out. She arrived in Paris as a teenager in the late fifties, broke and unable to speak French. A real-life rom-com plotline quickly ensued. The impoverished waif met a gentle priest who found her tiny living quarters behind the Bastille. Then, at Les Deux Magots café on the Left Bank, Karina was discovered by a woman looking for fresh-faced models. And so it began.
