Beauty Icon: Romy Schneider

Schneider was born in Austria in 1938. Her parents were both actors, and she entered the family business at an early age, getting her big break as Empress Elisabeth of Austria in 1955's Sissi, which shot the 17-year-old Schneider to fame and sparked two sequels, both of which went to Cannes (left). Though she refused a fourth Sissi picture—noting in her diary, "I am neither kind nor sweet"—the part haunted her, and in 1972, she wound up playing the Empress again, albeit very differently, in Luchino Visconti's film Ludwig.
