Beauty Icon: Grunge Girls

In a bit of welcomed nostalgia, the nineties are all over the runways—and the airwaves these days: Designers such as Joseph Altuzarra have made waves with grunge-inspired parkas and plaid, cable network Teen Nick is getting blockbuster ratings re-airing episodes of sitcoms like Clarissa Explains It All, and IFC did its part with the hit show Portlandia. "Remember the nineties, when people were talking about getting piercings and tribal tattoos, and they were singing about saving the planet, and forming bands?" That dream, the show intimates, is alive in Portland, Oregon. As if the alterna-world shout-outs weren't enough, Portlandia also features a wickedly unexpected familiar face: ex-Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein.
