Bang! Zap! Kapow! Wonder Woman, The Makeup Collection, Is Here
“Beauty outpowers Mother Nature,” Estée Lauder senior vice president and group creative director James Gager quipped this morning to a room full of editors who’d braved two feet of snow to check out MAC’s latest collaborative effort, a Wonder Woman makeup collection. The comic book heroine—who is set to take to the airwaves yet again, thanks to a new pilot picked up by NBC—has inspired many a brand extension since she debuted in 1942, ranging from her very own red, blue, and yellow underoos in the seventies to a pair of similarly colored Vans in the more recent past.
In this latest incarnation, Wonder Woman’s stacked W’s and mini leotard inspire a lineup of jumbo-sized Mineralize Skinfinishes, Lipglasses, Penultimate Eye Liners, Nail Lacquers, Lipsticks, Pigments, and a whole range of MAC’s popular Opulash mascara in a rainbow of different shades. “Let’s just supersize everything,” MAC senior vice president of global product development, Jennifer Balbier, remembers thinking when the idea to join forces with DC Comics and Warner Brothers on the collection first came up. And so they did. (Will you ever be able to use all of the terra-cotta baked powder in that foundation compact? Probably not, but the extra-large, enameled case is one hell of a keepsake.)
The fun, playful element is certainly there, but make no mistake about it, this is not kids’ stuff. “We still have to be current with what’s happening with the season,” Gager insists of the “adult” collection, which is why everything on offer works perfectly with spring’s fresh-faced palette. Wonder Woman’s signature red pout is still there in the form of MAC Lipstick in Russian Red, but there are also creamy neutral, frosty bronze, and warm fuchsia bullets to chose from. The range won’t be available nationwide until February 10, but those of you in the New York area can get in on this limited-edition launch beginning today. MAC has erected a very festive pop-up shop in Soho, where you can partake in the cosmetics and all of their fun accessories (like red, gold, and blue metallic leather makeup bags with blue and white star-print linings) through April, as well as a few extras. In a clever bit of branding, MAC has produced five of its own beauty-themed comics. To prevent the women of the world from turning gray at the evil hands of Medusa, Wonder Woman saves the day with her trusty stash of—yup, you guessed it—lipstick, lacquer, and a little bit of blush.
