Mugatu’s Derelicte Campaign Lives!
Leave it to Vivienne Westwood to really rock the menswear shows—and to pay homage to Zoolander in the process. With a runway carpeted by flattened cardboard boxes and one model pushing a janky shopping cart, Dame Viv’s Sunday night men’s show in Milan seemed to take its cues directly from the Derelicte scene in Ben Stiller’s fashion industry parody. According to a press release, Westwood’s muse this season is “the roving vagrant whose daily getup is a battle gear for the harsh weather conditions.” Successfully pulling off the questionable theme meant jumpsuits, a myriad of crumpled outerwear, and some very deliberate hair and makeup tricks. Hair stylist Adalberto Vanoni and makeup artist Cristiana Ceccarelli were the lucky duo charged with translating “homeless chic” into beauty terms. Backstage at Museo della Permanente, this meant disheveled, matted-down hair with smatterings of powder to create the illusion of an early-morning frost, as if, you know, the models had woken up in the street, and equally pallid complexions with concealer-painted lips and red-rimmed eyes, which we surmise were used to create the illusion of dehydration and exhaustion. Whether or not the whole affair was in poor taste is up for debate, but I, for one, am always up for a little catwalk amusement. If “Blue Steel” happened to make an appearance on the Fall runways, I would not be disappointed. You? [London Times]
