The “New Debutantes” Come Out Backstage at Oscar de la Renta
“Oscar wanted young girls who are just coming into womanhood—the new debutantes,” Orlando Pita told us backstage at Oscar de la Renta’s show yesterday. The hairstylist decided to channel Grace Kelly on her wedding day. Re-creating the late Princess of Monaco’s full bun from her 1956 nuptials, Pita pulled hair into high ponytails before weaving it through “rats” (mesh doughnuts used to give hair fullness and height) and spritzing with his T3 Control Heat-Seeking Hair Spray to hold. Working a “fab eye” into the royal coming-out party, makeup artist Gucci Westman put her own spin on this season’s bright shadow and liner trend with emerald lids inspired by the gown worn by Freja Beha Erichsen (see look 59). Finger-blending the bright green shade from Revlon’s ColorStay 12 Hour Eyeshadow Quad in Silver Fox with its Matte Eyeshadow in Venetian Blue, Westman added an unexpected twist to demure de la Renta beauty, which typically begins and ends with slightly smoldering eyes and velvety skin. One thing did hark back to the designer’s classic, ladylike aesthetic, though; a de la Renta princess is tattoo-free, which meant that inked-up catwalkers, like Erichsen, were touched up with Ben Nye’s Total Conceal All Wheel before they hit the runway.
