Things Get “Real and Raw” Backstage At Oscar De La Renta
“Very fresh, optimistic, natural, and pretty.” The words rolled off makeup artist Gucci Westman’s tongue as she enthusiastically applied cream-textured neutral tones to models’ lips and cheeks backstage at Oscar de la Renta’s Resort show this afternoon. “The focus is really on the girls—we need this freshness right now,” Westman continued, patting alternating strokes of Revlon’s Cream Blush in Berry Flirtatious and Not So Nude onto skin with her fingers. To complete her tribute to “realism and rawness,” Westman brushed brows upward, filling in sparse areas with pigmented powder before taking down lips with foundation or concealer. A quick mist of thermal water spray left that coveted dewy finish, “as though the girls have just run off the beach and slipped into their Oscar,” Frédéric Fekkai hair stylist Andre Rodman offered. For his part, Rodman was also taking things back to basics, prepping models’ hair with Fekkai Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray to create texture for two easy waves that fell on either side of the girls’ faces.
Seeing as how flawless skin and hair necessitate a flawless body, de la Renta brought in the big guns for his gams-friendly Resort show, namely Martha Friedlander. A “body specialist” best known for her work at the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows, Friedlander specializes in creating bronzed, uniformly toned legs, arms, torsos, and whatever else is visible on the runway using hand-mixed “concoctions” of lotions and gels paired with different shades of shimmer. Homemade tinted skin salves are an easy DIY beauty trick for the summer, too—should you be “slipping into your Oscar.” Just mix a touch of liquid bronzer with your favorite lotion, cream, or oil and raise your hemline at will.—Celia Ellenberg
