Toasting Womanity In A “Temple Of Machismo”
As one of New York’s most notable culture vultures, Kim Hastreiter knows how to throw a party—or make that curate a party. The Paper magazine editor has a knack for gathering creative types for the pure pleasure of giving herself and those in attendance the opportunity to mingle and “talk to someone they’ve never met before,” as she said over lunch yesterday at midtown’s monolithic power-lunch spot The Four Seasons. And talk they did. At one end of the long, family-style table set up to fête Thierry Mugler’s new fragrance, Womanity, designer Elise Øverland schmoozed with FIT’s Valerie Steele about the merits of fashion and art (and fashion as art), while style icon and (Style.com T-shirt model) Iris Apfel chatted with Paper‘s Mickey Boardman at the other. Seated next to Fern Mallis, who just flew into New York post-Mumbai fashion week, Hastreiter extolled the virtues of Mugler’s fig and caviar perfume and the message behind it, which, according to Christophe de Lataillade, creative director of Thierry Mugler Parfum, is that “the power of women today is the strong, invisible connection between them.”
“It’s filled with contrast—just like women,” Hastreiter added of the sweet and savory eau—and the venue she chose for the days’ event. Threeasfour’s Adi Gil and Gabriel Asfour and contemporary artist Rosson Crow also turned out for the party. Truth be told, there was something empowering about taking in wine and intelligent conversation in that great “temple of machismo built by mad ad men,” as Hastreiter so aptly described the boys’ club on East 52nd Street.
