Makeup Bag Check: Hailee Steinfeld
The Face Painter: Makeup artist Stephen Sollitto.
The Eyes: “Even though Hailee is so young, I thought it was the perfect venue to be a bit more adventurous with her makeup,” said Sollitto, who broke out a purple eye palette before even applying a base. “If a 14-year-old can’t wear purple liner, who can?” the makeup artist asked, dusting the purplish shadow from Chanel’s Quadra Eye Shadow compact in Kaska Beige underneath Steinfeld’s bottom lashes, dragging it up and out so it reached her upper lid. “I went back over that with the gold from the same palette,” Sollitto explained, softening the edges with a brush so there were no harsh lines. Lids were covered with the same purple pigment, which Sollitto swept all the way to the brows. Reaching for NARS Eye Pencil in Manon, “a plain and simple purple,” Sollitto lined the inner rims of Hailee’s eyes, continuing above and below both lash lines. As a final step, he “grinded” Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Black into the roots of the lashes.
The Face: “Since I hadn’t done her foundation yet, I used a makeup wipe to clean up any shadow that had dropped on to her cheekbones,” Sollitto said. Then he blended Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup in Beige Rose Tendre all over Steinfeld’s complexion to even out her skin tone. For a slight pop of color, Sollitto swept its Joues Contraste blush in Rose Dust across the apples of her cheeks—”a perfect blushing pink.”
The Lips: Sollitto started with Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipstick in Bel Ami 66, a “faded raspberry,” but to ensure that Steinfeld didn’t look “garish” with too many colors, the face painter ultimately settled on Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Evasion 48. “It’s a paler pink and yet enough to support the dramatic eye.”
The Result: Steinfeld bested Elle Fanning in her own age group and kept pace with more senior Chanel-o-philes, like Kate Bosworth.
