The Makeup Maven Gets A Manicure
Pat McGrath is a backstage wizard with the power to turn models into digitized virtual dolls with orange eyebrows one day and Sicilian beauties with pure skin and soft pink lips the next. Her own personal look, however, is pretty consistent. The renowned makeup artist wears a uniform of all black, her complexion always perfect and always bare. Which is why spying her deep burgundy-painted fingers at Dolce & Gabbana was such a surprise. “It’s my first manicure in ten years,” said McGrath, who up until this season has preferred to keep her busy hands varnish-free backstage. Why the sudden affinity for color? “I bought a new piece of jewelry and Steven Meisel told me, ‘If you’re going to wear it, your hands need to be totally done,” she divulged (her new bauble was sadly not on display yesterday; that gorgeous diamond-encrusted jade band pictured above is her regular, day-to-day fare). The facepainter is easing her way into pro tips with rich hues like Dolce & Gabbana’s Intense Nail Lacquer in Red, two coats of which had neared the end of their shelf life by the time we noticed them. “It’s Milan-worn,” McGrath joked of the pretty polish that was just starting to chip. But not to worry: “I’ve already got another appointment scheduled in Paris,” she informed us. What shade will she choose for her second manicure in ten years? We’ll find out when Pat takes the City of Light on Thursday at Balenciaga.
