Beauty Etiquetter: The Great Hair-Tie-as-Accessory Debate
The Quandary: Is it unsanitary to wear your hair tie on your wrist?
The Expert in Residence:Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, Trichologist at Philip Kingsley Clinic, NYC
The Advice: “Summer means heat! For many of us, having a hair tie on our wrist is a convenience so that we can quickly throw our hair in a ponytail. But is it safe and sanitary? Many factors play into the equation. For example, how frequently you are showering. If you shower daily, your hair tie is being cleansed with water and soap and therefore there is less buildup of germs. Additionally, because the tie itself has minimal scalp contact, it is unlikely to cause harm. Depending upon the type of hair tie you use, washing it in the laundry machine will help to maintain cleanliness. Fabric scrunchies should be thrown in the laundry every few days for optimal cleanliness. Regarding safety, it is critical that your hair tie is not too tight on your wrist, because it can interfere with circulation. Wearing a hair tie on your wrist makes life easier, but remember that your health is most important, so keep it clean!”—As told to Aja Mangum
