Throwback Thursday: Nail Art, The Prequel
Throwback Thursday is a new feature on Beauty Counter in which we pore over the pages of our favorite glossies from decades past in search of a little modern-day makeup and hair inspiration.
The Model: Jean Shrimpton
The Moment: Multicolored Nails
The Motivation: The past five years have meant a renaissance for DIY manicures. From acrylic tips, stencils, bejeweled adornments, and glitter polishes to gel and shellac finishes the nail business continues to boom. But manicure experimentation has long been a part of the culture of finger-painting. Allow us to direct your attention to this Richard Avedon-lensed shoot for Harper’s Bazaar circa 1965 in which Jean Shrimpton sports not one, not two, but three spring-inspired lacquers in pink, yellow, and orange. Shrimpton is also making a case for how well a pastel polish palette compliments a metallic wardrobe—be it a space suit, or a pantsuit.
