A Beauty Boutique Grows In Brooklyn
The facialist-turned-skincare tycoon tale is a familiar one at this point. Kate Somerville, Tracie Martyn, Tammy Fender, Eve Lom, and Sarah Chapman have all made careers for themselves as both aestheticians and brands, churning out eponymous lines to offer clients the same level of expertise they get during a treatment. A name you may be slightly less familiar with is Amanda Lacey. Something of a skincare star in her native London, Lacey specializes in botanical oil-infused products formulated by famed cosmetologist Colette Haydon (she of REN Skincare and Jo Wood Organics fame). While her Chelsea-based studio and retail space at Harvey Nichols are popular hangouts for Londoners like Gwyneth Paltrow and Emily Blunt, she’s remained relatively unknown to American beauty junkies for one simple reason: Her line has never been sold here, until now. A lone purveyor has just been gifted Lacey’s range, and it’s not Sephora, Ulta, or Bergdorf’s. No, the store in question is Shen Beauty and believe it or not, it’s in Brooklyn.
“These girls can control me,” Lacey jokes of Shen Beauty’s Jessica Richards and Jules Stringer, who opened their Cobble Hill beauty boutique in October. A former TV presenter and beauty writer in London, the British-born Stringer didn’t have too difficult a time wooing Lacey across the Atlantic (and the East River); the two women have been friends and associates for years. As for the rest of the lines stocked at Shen, you’ll find fellow smash-hit Brit brands like Lubatti and Aromatherapy Associates, as well as local favorite Bubble Room (a Brooklyn-based organic range) and the organic shea butter line Out of Africa. “There’s something for everyone,” says Richards, who admittedly opened the store as “a necessity for myself. There’s no beauty stores here”—and certainly none that stock Lacey’s cult-favorite Cleansing Pomade, Pink Cream, and Miracle Tonic. “We’re already selling through it,” Stringer says. Not bad for Lacey’s first month in the U.S. of A.
