Rodarte And Francis Ford Coppola Celebrate Things That Go Bump In The Night
Kate and Laura Mulleavy have a well-publicized taste for horror flicks, so when Francis Ford Coppola dedicated the latest issue of his literary and art magazine, Zoetrope: All-Story to the horror genre, the sisters behind Rodarte were an obvious choice to take the reins. The Mulleavys guest-designed the Fall 2011 issue of the magazine, which coincides with the premiere of Coppola’s horror film Twixt at at the Toronto Film Festival. (Twixt stars Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Ben Chaplin, and as a young ghost, Rodarte favorite Elle Fanning.)
The new issue includes photography commissioned by Rodarte from Autumn de Wilde (who shot Maddie Kulicka and Karlie Kloss, below) and David Armstrong, as well as pieces by Wolfgang Tillmans, Roe Ethridge, and Mari Eastman. The stories range from work by Jim Shepard, Ryu Murakami, and Karen Russell to an old hat at the horror genre: Edgar Allen Poe. Creating the issue put the Mulleavys in mind of a few of their own favorite spooky stories, too. Asked for their favorites, the sisters selected Frankenstein (Kate’s pick) and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (Laura’s). The new issue hits stands September 21.
