A French Twist on Tradition
The sky may be falling but at least one tradition endures on the social circuit, the Winter Wonderland Ball at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. "At Christmastime there's no place like this that gets everybody in the mood," said Marjorie Gubelmann, chairman of this year's edition, the tenth. The evening was sponsored by Chanel Fine Jewelry, which explained why everywhere you turned a camellia flower was in full bloom: on chandeliers, in the centerpieces at the all black-and-white dinner, even in the projections that played on the walls. Margherita Missoni, a first-timer at the event, used her iPhone to snap pictures of the holiday oasis—including a train show that weaved in and out of a miniature New York landscape. Junior chair Byrdie Bell, meanwhile, broke with tradition by forgoing a ball gown for a sparkly jumpsuit. Then again, Coco herself was not averse to wearing the pants in any given situation.
