With the Golden Globes over and the Oscars still a month away, it would've been no surprise if the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards failed to thrill. Happily, that wasn't the way it turned out. The ceremony itself, which honors both film and television, may have felt like déjà vu all over again, but fashion-wise, few of the evening's big stars took the night off. Penélope Cruz won top honors for her black Azzedine Alaïa halter gown. Amy Adams in strapless bordeaux Giambattista Valli and Katie Holmes in Jil Sander, one of the few cocktail dresses of the evening, weren't far behind. And Claire Danes in scarlet Nina Ricci and Anne Hathaway in white Azzaro deserve mention, as well.
Décolleté was on full display: Actresses from Susan Sarandon to Olivia Wilde worked deep, plunge-front dresses, but Kate Winslet's second-skin Narciso Rodriguez was the most, ahem, persuasive. The Michelle Obama effect, meanwhile, found Laura Linney, Evan Rachel Wood, and Taraji P. Henson in one-shoulder gowns by Michael Kors, Monique Lhuillier, and Hervé L. Leroux, respectively. In a night of bold colors, red was a standout. Diane Lane in David Meister, Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera, and Jane Krakowski in Roberto Cavalli all donned different shades of scarlet. But leave it to Best Actress winner Meryl Streep to steal the show. After running to the stage in black pants, collecting high-fives along the way, she claimed her victory was so unexpected she "didn't even buy a dress."
