It was Election Day back home in New York, but Style.com's editor in chief Dirk Standen was in London last night, throwing a cozy dinner at Shrimpy's to celebrate the city's top design talents and Issue 03 of Style.com/Print, which features British model Cara Delevingne on the cover. "Is there a TV around here?" he wondered aloud, eager for a quick peek at the exit polls. "From a fashion perspective," Standen said, "I'm with Team MObama. I think Michelle Obama is a bit more adventurous with fashion—and that has done the industry a lot of good."
In the crowd at the London hotspot were Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton, Christopher Kane, Erdem Moralioglu, Mary Katrantzou, Matthew Williamson, Marios Schwab, Giles Deacon, Stephen Jones, Simone Rocha, and J.W. Anderson. And that was only the designers. Mingling with Style.com contributors Tim Blanks, Jo-Ann Furniss, Maya Singer, and Alexander Fury were Dinos and Tiphaine Chapman, Susie Lau, and Fashion East's Lulu Kennedy, the subject of a profile in the new issue of the magazine.
"I read Style.com all the time, especially the reviews," Sarah Burton told us. "I think that other designers, not just me, think the reviews are really fair, yet critical—it helps us to up our game. I, for one, listen to what is written." Given that her due date is coming fast and furious, could there be an Alexander McQueen children's line in the offing? "Oh my goodness, I haven't really thought of it," she said. "My biggest challenge with this bump these days is to bend down and do seam work on a hem—and I have another couple months of this. We shall see what the future holds."
