Tacos and Tequila
New York fashion week got off to an early start last night when Barneys hosted a dinner at La Esquina for the L.A.-based CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up Jennifer Meyer. The jewelry designer is in town for her inaugural presentation at New York fashion week, with her husband Tobey Maguire. "There's really very little fashion world in L.A.," Meyer told Style.com. "New Yorkers are warm, generous, and have open arms—but it's much colder here!"
Meyer's Fashion Fund mentor, Diane von Furstenberg, sang her praises as guests took their seats: "Jennifer, we are happy to welcome you to New York, in this family of fashion. Last time I was a mentor, it was for Alex Wang, and he did pretty well." Within a week of being assigned to Meyer, von Furstenberg apparently flew to the designer's Los Angeles studio and spent an entire afternoon coaching her. "Diane believes in what she thinks," said the CFDA's Steven Kolb. "And she's not shy to tell people, whether they want to hear it or not." Meyer's upcoming collection features more statement pieces, in brighter colors and bigger stones than usual. A direction DVF pushed her in? "She loves bigger pieces, that's for sure!" said Meyer.
