L-O-L-A, Lola: Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s Berlin Circus
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster staged a performance last week in Berlin. Part of her M.2062 series, it introduced Lola Montez, the latest addition to a lineup of curious, fictional, or historical characters the artist has had “appear” in cities across the globe over the past two years. Lola Montez was joined by a “ringmaster” and a clown, all gathered together with the spectators in a circus tent in Kreuzberg.
The predecessor to Lola had been Edgar Allan Poe, a writer whose work, as the artist’s statement described, “deliberately blurred the distinctions between fantasy, fiction, and alleged reportage.”
