An Unlikely Story: Old Meets New at a Michelin-Starred South London Eatery
Old met new recently at Restaurant Story, an elegant, modernist pavilion squeezed onto a roundabout next to a tiny public garden in Bermondsey. Story, the Michelin-starred brainchild of culinary upstart Tom Sellers, is a youngster. Affligem, our host, is very, very old. It started life back in 1074 (this is not a typo). The old (yours truly) of London menswear dined with the new, London’s young bucks Agi & Sam, Matthew Miller, Alan Taylor, Liam Hodges.
Affligem’s delicious abbey ale served as inspiration for food such as the dripping candlestick (it was dripping, and it dripped). Also on the menu were Storeos (Tom’s amazing little squid-ink biscuit and eel-mousse cookies of joy), nasturtiums and oysters, and rabbit sandwiches. Each dish a story inspired by one of Tom’s memories. Compared favorably with the Fat Duck, Story is a tale worth much retelling.
