Bloom Boom: In Praise of Thom Browne’s Floral Foray
Before I start, here’s a little backstory: I have a terrible weakness for buying from the Resort collections. Like a moth to a colorful flame, I am drawn to bright shades, and nothing attracts my attention more than a vivid floral print!
I also happen to be a long-standing fan of Thom Browne, and now, for Resort 2015, two of my favorite things have come together, as Browne has done FLOWERS. It’s testament to his extreme talent as a designer that he has taken a new angle on ever-popular floral prints. His attention to detail and the exceptional fit of his tailoring run along the same lines as a Savile Row suit-maker. The fact that this is combined with his subversive eye for surreal juxtapositions is a dream come true for me.
I prepared myself in advance for the showroom appointment and underwent “retail therapy” to control myself, knowing that in my excitement, I am prone to overspending. This went out the window when I got there, though. His recent collection was hypnotizing! It took my breath away with its multiple manifestations of flower pieces. There were hand-painted skirts, knitted coats with 3-D appliqués, multicolored print dresses, and, the items that I’m most lusting after, finely embroidered jackets.
When I tried on the shrunken check jacket with bracelet sleeves and hyper-hued blossom embroidery, it was just crying out for me to take it home. It was quite a challenge to hand it back. I ordered a selection for the store and am counting down the days until we receive them at Plum!
