The Big Three: Toronto, from Tofu to Techno
I spend a lot of time in Toronto. In fact, I’m there so much, I’m practically an honorary Canadian citizen. I always stay with my friends Gairy Brown and Blair Chivers. Gairy is one of the biggest promoters in town, and Blair is an amazing artist. They live in the Annex, which is quickly becoming one of the hottest parts of town—lots of young people and the most amazing restaurants. Here is a list of places I always visit when I’m in town.
I practically step off the plane and head straight there. It’s one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the city. I highly recommend this joint. They have the best juices ever, and the hummus is out of this world. My favorite dishes are the vegetable bowls. I usually get the sweet potato, grilled tofu steaks, sprouts, and miso dressing. MAGIC!
After I’m done at Juice, I head to BMV Books. It’s a discount book chain, but I always find the most amazing art and photography books there, books that would cost an arm and a leg in New York. I normally have to buy an extra suitcase just to get them home. Love that place!
One of the best new clubs to open in the Annex is CODA. Owned by Joel Smye and Stephan Fils of the recently shuttered, much-beloved underground emporium Footwork, everyone from Art Department, Tiga, and yours truly has played there. It’s so hot right now that Kaskade requested to do an intimate show at the club. Get there!
