As Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor explained at an appointment today, the relaunch of their brand last season proved so successful that they actually had to turn down business. That's a problem most designers would kill to have, but then, most designers aren't making leopard-print French terry sweatsuits,
top-and-skirt sets in tie-dyed velour, backless hoodies, and kicky little ruffled dresses in Liberty prints. It bears repeating—for the umpteenth time—that Skaist-Levy and Nash-Taylor, the founders of Juicy Couture, know what they're about. That's why they're publishing a book about how to launch a business, out this spring. And their canny move here was to ever so slightly shift emphasis away from the kind of things they want to wear and onto the kind of things Nash-Taylor's daughter is looking for. That included vegan leather and faux fur, as well as affordable cashmere-blend knits. This ought to be another season of turning business away.
