"It's the L word," Donna Karan said this morning at her Resort show. "Long, lean, languid, luxurious, light, and I'm probably forgetting another one." Well, there is an L in effortless.
At her unfussy best, Karan can cut a jacket with the same finesse that she drapes the jersey cocktail dresses she's famous for. She opened with a sexy, tailored blazer that put ample amounts of skin on display above its single button. For accompaniment, there was a slim skirt with a fluted hem below the knee. Karan joked that anybody who wanted to borrow something for tonight's CFDA Awards was welcome to it. Like the outfit that followed it (an ivory canvas halter top with peplum waist paired with an elongating black skirt), that first look would strike the right dressed-up but not-trying-too-hard vibe that fashion insiders favor—it's only the celebrity guests who wear the gowns.
The polka-dot-print palazzo pants were a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. As for the famous jersey, it got a good-looking update in the form of a twist-front ivory dress with a built-in cape back. The only misstep was a red silk charmeuse gown that felt weighed down by its ruffles. Black jersey separates trimmed in gold coins felt like a more modern choice for evening.
