Humberto Leon and Carol Lim know how to make an event out of any occasion. They staged a presentation of their new Opening Ceremony Resort collection aboard the historic Freedom yacht, a sister ship to the presidential USS Sequoia. Leon explained, "We knew the boat would only be in town for a few days and thought, why not invite people to sip tequila at sunset and see the clothes in a fun and informal setting?"
It was a fitting venue considering each of the label's lineups is based on a different voyage, and Korea (where Lim's parents hail from) was this season's destination. The designers pointed out subtle references to hanbok robes and traditional Asian armor on pieces like a watercolor-print silk shift that featured asymmetrical folds and a sash cinched at the waist. More than anything, though, this outing was about keeping the cool OC girl up-to-the-minute. Some of the noteworthy wardrobe refreshers included powder-blue leather biker jackets with a boxy shape, as well as spongy neoprene knitwear and fun romper skorts. There was an emphasis on relaxed separates that conveyed the ease of a sweat suit. Sporty quilted pullovers embellished with stacked floral sequins were mixed up with casual track pants and updated trainers to modern effect. While nothing was terribly boat rocking, most of these pieces are sure to resonate with the retailer's loyal customers.
