Wrap up Fall fashion in a neat package? Not hardly. Milan's dark, moody romance couldn't have been farther from the colorful exuberance and far-flung themes of the Paris gang. But as the dust settles, a few big themes have emerged: neat jackets and dresses, a new skinny pant, playful skirts, beautiful blouses, an abundance of great coats and, overall, a return to glamour. Below, some of the best examples.—Janet Ozzard

McQueen balanced bondage with frilly Victoriana. Karl Lagerfeld rethought the classic Chanel cardi-jacket. Skirts of all lengths were a strength at Christian Dior. Coats, like Dolce & Gabbana's studded version, are Fall's big statement. Gucci's ankle-bound pants are style exclamation points.
Vuitton did coolly stylish jackets for Fall. Prada's dresses in sherbet colors and black marked a return to glamour. Versace showed coats with clout. Key for Fall: A black sculptural jacket, like those at Yohji Yamamoto. Perfect romantic blouses showed up at Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche.
