The Fall shows saw the return of some familiar names, but it was the girls in the freshman class who made the headlines—and not only for their gorgeous faces. Among this season's surprises: Modeling contest winners actually became top models; breakout stars were in their twenties, not barely of-age; and up-and-comers used London as a springboard to success in Europe. Here's a roundup of the ones who caught our attention, from Estonia's Karmen Pedaru to Canada's Amanda Laine.
Aussie Abbey Lee—who could almost be mistaken for an Olsen, give or take a foot—landed a Gucci exclusive and all the top Paris shows after scoring a coveted spot on Ralph Lauren's veteran-heavy runway.

From a first exit at Jonathan Saunders to the coveted opening spot at Balenciaga, this blonde Brazilian with cheekbones as sharp as Nicolas Ghesquière's silhouettes was in all the right places all season long.

The 16-year-old Toronto native had never considered a career on the runways before entering (and winning) the Supreme/V magazine model contest last year. After walking Prada, opening Miu Miu, and closing Louis Vuitton, she's poised to be the next big thing.

How do you follow up a Prada exclusive? Russian Anna Gushina (real first name, Luxe—really) fixed her icy blues on the Fall catwalks of Giambattista Valli, Miu Miu, and Proenza Schouler, the latter of which she opened.

In a sea of similar faces, pillowy-lipped Stojilkovic is no wallflower. The Belgrade native's regal walk and unforgettable features stood out on the runways at Halston, Prada, and Christian Dior.

This lanky Austrian first appeared in 2002 but took time off to finish school. Her strong jaw and killer cheekbones were just right for the Fall runways at Marc Jacobs and Lanvin.

This London native with the endless legs has been walking the runways for the better part of a year, but with appearances at Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Zac Posen, among others, Fall was her breakthrough season.

With an Alberta Ferretti Spring '08 campaign and the March Vogue Italia cover under her belt, this fair-skinned Slovak had a banner season, walking Alexander McQueen, Jil Sander, and Rodarte.

Rarely would a new girl look to London to establish herself, but this Baltic beauty did just that. She booked Christopher Kane and Jaeger before moving on to virtually every major show in Milan and Paris.

With almost no preseason buzz, this statuesque Norwegian hit the ground running in early February and never looked back. An enviable New York show list was topped by an even better week in Paris.
