Etro

Milan is known as a gray city—but no one can blame Etro for that. Colorful prints are Etro's thing, and they come in all forms, from blooms to beasts, ethnic to abstract, with paisley the signature motif. The patterns are splashed freely on mix-and-match separates that belong in the closet of a luxury-loving bohemian.

Founded by Gimmo Etro in 1968, the house began as a fabric producer, selling silk, cashmere, linen, and cotton in eye-catching patterns and saturated shades to Milan's ready-to-wear and couture designers. The first freestanding store opened in 1983 and featured ties, scarves, and shawls; handbags and luggage were soon added to the mix, and in the late eighties came clothing, which landed on the runway in 1994. Gimmo's daughter, Veronica, is the current womenswear designer, and her brother, Kean, handles the menswear line.
