Thakoon

NEW YORK, July 10, 2007

"In my head I went to Africa," said Thakoon Panichgul, explaining the inspiration behind his first-ever resort collection. The safari daydream produced the designer's sportiest work to date—silk anoraks topped tanks and rolled-cuff shorts, a cargo green skirt came with a paper-bag waist, and a drawstring neckline gave one LBD the tossed-on, easy-chic sensibility of a hoodie. That's not to say he abandoned the feminine charms his clothes are known for. He reworked his familiar rose print into a graphic white-on-black embroidery. And there were plenty of his now-signature off-the-shoulder looks. The most impressive number was a patchworked animal-print gown that combined leopard spots and zebra stripes and still managed to come off as understated and subtle.
