Zero + Maria Cornejo

NEW YORK, June 11, 2009
By Laird Borrelli-Persson
Are there now two photographers in the Maria Cornejo/Mark Borthwick household? One of the prints in Cornejo's new collection—of a sunset in Red Hook—was taken by the designer on her iPhone. Another is based on the colorful Goan beading that festoons the shoulders of a sleeveless dress. Cornejo revisited some of her signature draped looks for Resort, but in the aforementioned prints and shades of ultraviolet, raspberry, and turquoise. This seems a smart approach for a designer who eschews trendiness in favor of timeliness. We'll be watching closely, though, to see how her upcoming Parisian jaunt—she's opening a pop-up store there this summer—will influence her next saison.
