The Row

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen began The Row with a T-shirt, but they might be even better known for their leather leggings. Plenty of labels were doing them back in their heyday a few years ago, but The Row's were the ne plus ultra. Well, they got a reinvention today that will have girls saving their pennies and signing their names on wait lists once more. Equestrian-meets-aristocrat is the message this season, so the leggings had jodhpur-like details, with ribbing on the calves, buttons on the ankle, and pointy hems that extended over the front of the models' feet. We were instantly smitten, and we don't even like horses.

The sisters described their approach to pre-fall as item-driven. There were at least two contenders for "It dress"—a long-sleeve wool number with a fuller skirt, navy on top and charcoal gray on bottom, and a similar trompe l'oeil style rendered in a stretch poplin stripe above the waist and a black stretch wool below it. On the tailoring front, they offered a fitted velvet pantsuit alongside a looser, easier style in wool with a tie-front jacket and culottes cropped below the knee. And no collection from the Olsens is complete without a fur. The standout here was a coat made from different types of fox, some sheared, some not, with pops of coral and pink. A matching bag almost, but not quite, stole the show in their display, understated opulence being the order of the day when it comes to their handbags. Get this, their new crocodile bucket bag comes with an optional webbed cotton strap.
