Cushnie et Ochs

The Cushnie et Ochs girls bring a refreshing sense of humor to their clothing. For Resort, they were inspired by the ideas of movement and duality in Sebastian Brajkovic's sculptural furniture designs. One quirky button-down had a gilt picture frame cut out in back ("to showcase a bra or lack of one," said Michelle Ochs). And a cashmere sweater dress came with two sets of sleeves, the second of which was meant to be tied around the waist. They also experimented with cool shoulder straps that rolled up from the hem—on both a collared shirtdress and an asymmetrical, lime-colored cocktail number. But this collection wasn't all about the novelty details. Many of the dresses were just plain sweet: A heavy jersey shift had a chiffon cowl that was like a built-in scarf, while another look with crisscross straps came in the same bold shade of orange as Ernie from Sesame Street, who was front and center on their mood board. Come to think of it, that one put the pretty in pretty funny, too.
