Sachin + Babi

NEW YORK, June 9, 2011
By Brittany Adams
Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia have been hopping from trunk sale to trunk sale around the country for the past few months, sussing out their customer. The major lesson learned was that everyone seems to respond positively to color. No surprise: They showed a Resort collection that was much brighter than their Fall outing. Babi laughed, "We're Indian, so pink is our navy blue, no? Photos of Pan Am stewardesses in the 1960's wearing Pepto pink, color-blocked uniforms were tacked up on the mood board, and that shade came into play on a sleeveless silk dress with decorative belts interwoven at the waistline. Texture factored in big, too. An asymmetrical skirt with an Ultrasuede wrap front had a croc-stamped leather belt. The designers wanted "to do ombré in a different way," so they used thread embroidery instead of tie-dye to create a similar effect on a shift with a scalloped hemline. This was a well-considered lineup; it looks like Sachin + Babi is hitting its stride.
