The contemporary label Sea is best known for its on-trend, sporty separates, but Sean Monahan and Monica Paolini shook things up for Resort with a collection that incorporated scads of Victorian lace. At a studio preview, the designers pointed out their favorite piece in the new lineup: an ankle-grazing white gown that mixed the delicate doily stuff with eyelet. They called it their "summer wedding dress," and while it's easy to visualize a modern bride saying "I do" in the vintage-inspired number at a casual beachside ceremony, you could also imagine wearing it with flats while pounding the city streets on a balmy weekend afternoon. In addition to that standout, Monahan and Paolini showed effortlessly cool pieces such as a cropped linen tweed duffle coat and its matching shorts, lightweight "popover" frocks, silk pajama trousers in a vibrant "Aztec animals" print, and crisp cotton T-shirts featuring lace insets. A few of the black lace looks—including a double-breasted jumpsuit and a collared sheath styled with a slim leather skirt over it—also felt fresh. It's nice to see the softer side of Sea.
