Jonathan Simkhai has incorporated basketball elements into his collections since the beginning, but for Resort he really drove the idea home. "Sportluxe" is what the designer called the look during an interview in his brand-new Garment Center studio and showroom, to which he recently relocated after a two-year stint in the CFDA Incubator.

The idea was best represented in a pair of dressed-up basketball shorts done in shimmery pink leather, which could easily be worn for evening in place of a skirt. Simkhai emphasized netting, too, blowing it up on sweatshirts and piecing together different versions to create a racerback dress. Ribbed knits were another high point: The colors—pink, off-white, navy—were right on. And the skinny, tubular tank dress was a cool alternative to typical cocktail party attire.

While some of the pieces could read a little harsh—particularly the embossed styles—this collection looked more "Simkhai" and felt more individual than anything else the designer has done. A new office, his very own showroom—Simkhai is growing up.
