Marc by Marc Jacobs

NEW YORK, February 5, 2008
By Tim Blanks
Was that Darrin Stevens from Bewitched trolling down Marc Jacobs's catwalk, clutching a tiny case? That's always going to be the problem with this show. The girls look sensational; the boys look like second fiddles. Okay, that's a tad extreme—more like prom dates. But that's always been the essence of the Men of Marc by Marc. Despite their vintage flair and the formal details with which they dress up their daywear, their place in the Jacobs universe is well and truly set. Give them credit, at least, for knowing better than to show up their dates.

Even though Darrin was wearing a suit that smacked of an early sixties ad exec, he wasn't quite a Mad Man (unless you count model-of-the-moment Cole with his forty-yard stare). Luckier was the guy who got to wear the wool biker jacket, or the one with the black mohair sweater painted with lurid green stripes—outfits that had a cool little kick. To win the hand of a princess like Karlie Kloss in her winsome bubble dress, for instance, these Friends of Darrin would have to rely on narrow plaid pants with a tweed jacket, say, or a black suit with a tiny notch lapel. No contest there.
